Dear Holly…

Today is a “happy” day.

Hugh Hefner’s ex Holly Madison was hosting a party at TAO Beach in The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. On July 5, the gorgeous playboy model snapped in her Sinful bikini – complete with stretch marks. At age 30, the 5′7″ beauty (whose measurements are 36-23-35) probably weighing a mere 120-125lbs and yet to have children, she is hardly a prime candidate.

But, in today’s society where celebrities show their 24in waist jeans and slip into size 1 clothes, these angry-looking scars are no longer solely the badge of the overweight or pregnant. Traditionally, society has always associated stretch marks with excessive weight gain, be it through diet or pregnancy. But the growing (and somewhat frightening trend) of us skinny bitches (as we are often referred to as) is revealing a whole new category of stretch mark sufferers.

The super skinny girls can also find themselves suffering from stretchmarks as well. Enter the “nerd” in me. The science is simple – if put your body under too much trauma, too quickly, it will manifest the stress and strain as a stretch mark – a gap deep below the skin’s surface in the dermis, caused by the stretching or tearing of collagen and elastin fibers that form the support network responsible for tone and firmness. While weight gain forces the skin’s supportive fibers to bursting point, rapid and extreme weight loss sends the body into starvation mode, meaning it can no longer rejuvenate itself efficiently. So…as it loses its natural elasticity, skin eventually becomes slack – and stretched. Exit “nerd.”

I, being in my 30’s, 5′3.5″ (don’t forget that half!) weighing just under 100lbs (32-24-34), like Holly have stretch marks on the butt cheeks. I’ve had them since my freshman year of high school. Being an athlete (a damn good one I might add), my voluptuous derriere (ok voluptuous may be a wee bit of a stretch) grew too fast for the rest of my body.

But whatever the cause, and whatever your size, supposedly, help is at hand (lemme know what works). While few over-the-counter creams and professional therapies can help eradicate or prevent the formation of stretch marks, they can help to improve their appearance (supposedly).

I have been over the gasp’s and shock when people see them and cannot get over the shock of someone as petite as myself with them. It’s possible people! Either kiss them or play Etch-A-Sketch (I charge for the ladder).

We’ve seen the Girls Next Door, the Playboy spreads and on the red carpet – but airbrushed, makeup and “camera ready.” I want to personally thank the beautiful Holly Madison for stepping out to host naturally (no body makeup, etc).

Today is a “happy” day!
